Facial oil: why use it as a cleanser?

Using oil on your face might seem surprising. Yet, its benefits for the skin are well-established, especially when used as a makeup remover and cleanser. Our experts explain why this step is essential in any beauty routine.

Facial oil: optimal affinity with your skin

Your skin is covered by a thin protective layer called the hydrolipidic film. This film is primarily composed of fatty acids produced by the sebaceous glands (sebum). It is thanks to the occlusive effect of the hydrolipidic film that the stratum corneum retains sufficient hydration. It therefore plays a vital role in maintaining supple and comfortable skin.

However, the balance of this impermeable barrier is fragile. Its integrity is compromised by traditional foaming cleansers. Indeed, the sulfates they contain tend to strip the surface of your skin of its natural oils and impair its ability to regulate transepidermal water loss. As a result, your skin tries to defend itself by overproducing sebum. A vicious cycle then ensues: the oilier your skin, the more you feel the need to strip it.

Thanks to its natural fatty acid content, facial oil mimics the skin's lipid film. Even better, it helps strengthen it. It therefore ensures gentle cleansing that maintains an optimal level of surface sebum.

How does cleansing with a facial oil work?

Cleansing your skin with a facial oil is based on the principle of like-dissolve-like. In other words, it means that oil dissolves oil!

A makeup removing and/or cleansing oil is therefore perfectly suited to eliminating lipophilic molecules that can clog your pores. Like a magnet, it attracts and removes:

  • excess sebum
  • cellular debris
  • pollution particles
  • makeup, including waterproof

In addition to fatty acids, a vegetable oil contains an "unsaponifiable" fraction. This fraction includes several compounds that are very beneficial for skincare, such as sterols and vitamins, which give it specific properties. Unlike mineral oil (which is inert), it therefore does more than simply cleanse or remove makeup; it also provides your skin with active ingredients.

The ingredients to prioritize in your cleansing oil

Using a facial cleansing oil is suitable for all skin types. Contrary to popular belief, it's even ideal for cleansing oily skin, as it helps to rebalance sebum production.

At Laboté, we rely on a thorough skin analysis to offer you a unique formula perfectly suited to your skin's needs. Depending on its characteristics, we combine our cold-pressed virgin oils with a selection of medicinal plants to create your personalized makeup remover and cleansing oil:

  • Cornflower: soothing
  • Green tea: astringent
  • Damask rose: revitalizing
  • Hibiscus: regenerating
  • Magnolia: antioxidant

The Laboté Cleansing Oil Makeup Remover offers a 2-in-1 action: as an oil that both removes makeup and cleanses, it is self-sufficient and does not require additional cleansing products.

Our experts' advice on facial oil

  • Limit the use of your cleansing oil to once a day. Ideally, use it in the evening to rid your skin of impurities that clog it before its nighttime regeneration cycle.

  • Because they are inherently hydrophobic, oils can be difficult to rinse off properly. If you're worried about residue, opt for a facial oil enriched with gentle surfactants, like our Cleansing Oil . These allow your cleansing oil to transform into an emulsion upon contact with water.

  • Beyond its qualities as a facial cleanser, this oil is also suitable for daily skin nourishment. Capable of delivering targeted active ingredients deep into the surface layers thanks to its high penetration power, it is an excellent complement to your moisturizer.
