What is combination skin?

Combination skin , one of the most common skin types, is characterized by excess sebum on the T-zone, often leading to enlarged pores , and marked dehydration on the rest of the face, particularly the cheeks. In consultations, we observe that there are two types of combination skin:

  • Normal to oily skin (also called normal to combination) which, because of overly aggressive cleansing routines, produces excess sebum to defend itself: the famous "reactive shine" which appears on the T-zone, rich in sebaceous glands.
  • Oily skin (also called combination to oily) is often dehydrated on the sides of the face due to an overly aggressive cleansing routine or insufficient application of moisturizer. Indeed, we observe that our clients with combination to oily skin often opt for very mattifying and low-hydration day creams for oily skin (for fear of increasing shine or blemishes).

Adopt the best habits by discovering our best tips on dehydrated combination skin .

How to identify your skin type?

Whether it's normal to oily skin or dehydrated oily skin, combination skin is characterized by:

  • the presence of shine on the T-zone, from midday onwards (forehead, nose, chin)
  • the presence of dehydrated areas on the sides of the face that feel tight at certain times of the day (after cleansing and before applying cream, or when the air is dry, for example)

In the morning: hydration and skin protection

Upon waking, gently awaken your face with a toner; avoid using a cleanser to prevent stimulating sebum production. You can choose witch hazel (for radiance), rosemary (for purifying), and Damask rose (for antioxidants).

Hydration is key to your combination skin routine. Use a day cream for oily skin, such as our Purifying Anti-Sebum Cream with Wild Pansy Extract , or a day cream for sensitive and dehydrated skin, such as our Moisturizing Cream with Aloe Vera . Both day creams have a light, non-comedogenic texture that will hydrate your skin without clogging your pores, thanks in particular to the aloe vera in both formulas. Enhance the effects of your day cream with a hydrating serum applied before the cream.

If you need to combine purifying, hydrating, and anti-aging properties in a single product, choose our custom-made serum , formulated to meet all the needs of your combination skin. To target hydration and anti-aging, opt for our super firming serum .

Finally, we recommend protecting yourself from ultraviolet rays with SPF. To avoid overly comedogenic formulas, be aware that there are now powder-based sunscreens directly integrated into loose powder foundations, which are particularly suitable for combination skin.

In the evening: a sanitizing cleanse to limit excess sebum.

At the end of the day, once your skin has passed its peak sebum production (in the afternoon), apply a cleanser formulated with plant oils suitable for combination skin. Despite common misconceptions, cleansing oils are the best formulations for rebalancing combination skin, whether it's combination to oily or normal to combination. The cleansing oil with green tea extract provides a gentle, biomimetic double cleansing action, the technique we teach our clients during consultations. This technique simultaneously cleanses, purifies (thanks to the green tea), and targets shine, hydration, enlarged pores, and excess sebum characteristic of combination skin.

After cleansing and gently purifying, we highly recommend applying a specific night cream. To target hydration, cell renewal, and shine, opt for our regenerating cream with Nigella oil .

Twice a week: peeling and clay masks for combination skin

  • Applying a green clay mask, like our Purifying Mask, once a week is a must for combination skin. It detoxifies the skin and deeply cleanses pores without being harsh. This directly helps regulate sebum production and tighten enlarged pores. Alternate this mask weekly with our Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid and White Clay Mask , which is ideal for combination skin (hyaluronic acid is an excellent moisturizer, while white clay gently purifies).
  • To boost the results of your mask application, gently exfoliate with a keratolytic acid exfoliating powder peel . When used correctly, it will remove dead skin cells, tighten enlarged pores, and prevent the appearance of blemishes or blackheads that often occur on combination skin.

Our tips for combination skin

There are many plant oils and extracts suitable for combination skin. We particularly like to recommend these 3 medicinal plants:

  • Nigella: Purifying and antioxidant, this plant oil, highly prized for combination to oily skin, fights blackheads and protects the skin from external aggressors, particularly free radicals. It is one of the key active ingredients in our nighttime moisturizing cream.

  • Jojoba: its composition, very similar to the lipids that make up the hydrolipidic film, allows it to penetrate the skin quickly. Very fine and rich in unsaponifiables, it softens the skin, prevents the appearance of wrinkles, and has remarkable sebum-regulating properties.

  • Burdock: an essential part of the routine for combination or seborrheic skin, the root of this plant contains inulin and numerous active molecules with antibacterial properties that give rise to its purifying and detoxifying properties.
